How We Work

The Slapton Line Partnership meets throughout the year to discuss and develop the Adaptation Plan

In June 2025, a new SLP Adaptation Manager was appointed, and there has been ongoing work to align the focus and aims of the Partnership.

Following the damage to Start Bay in the 2025/26 Winter Storms, the Slapton Line Partnership has been working to ensure the 2023 Revised Strategy (Adaptation Plan) is incorporated into recovery efforts.

Working Groups

The Partnership currently has two active Working Groups to discus required upgrades to the network of Inland Routes in the area, and to create a vision for Amenity improvements and offerings.

Inland Routes

The Slapton Line Partnership’s Inland Routes Working Group has continued consultation with Devon County Council Highways to agree the first stage delivery of passing place improvements across strategic sections of the inland route network in 2026/27.

This will be delivered through a combination of:

  1. Route Treatment Works on key sections of the Inland Routes, including cleaning and remarking, minor patching, and resurfacing
  2. Improvements to traffic separation at major routing points, e.g. Totnes Cross
  3. Signage along routes unsuitable for oversize or long vehicles, and associated communication with routing advisors
  4. £1million set aside by DCC for improvements to passing places along North-South routes

In addition, Working Group members will hold discussions with local landowners to encourage the lowering of hedges, wherever possible, to ensure better visibility on narrow lanes. A request for a number of additional safety measures, such as remarking junctions and warning lights around school access points, has also been made.

The County Council remains committed to securing funding for the second stage of delivery as soon as possible.

The need for works on the inland routes was agreed prior to the Winter Storm damage to the A379 along the Slapton Line. However, it is recognised that the partial closure of the Slapton-Torcross section of this route presents a compelling need for works to be undertaken as soon as practicable, whilst managing traffic flows and access.
